Safety

The Chrysler Voyager has standard driver and front passenger side knee airbags mounted low on the dashboard. These airbags help prevent the driver and front passenger from sliding under their seatbelts or the main frontal airbags; this keeps them better positioned during a collision for maximum protection. Knee airbags also help keep the legs from striking the dashboard, preventing knee and leg injuries in the case of a serious frontal collision. The Traverse doesn’t offer knee airbags.

Both the Voyager and the Traverse have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, front wheel drive, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras and rear cross-path warning.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does 35 MPH front crash tests on new vehicles. In this test, results indicate that the Chrysler Voyager is safer than the Chevrolet Traverse:

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does side impact tests on new vehicles. In this test, which crashes the vehicle into a flat barrier at 38.5 MPH and into a post at 20 MPH, results indicate that the Chrysler Voyager is safer than the Chevrolet Traverse:

Warranty

The Voyager’s corrosion warranty is unlimited miles longer than the Traverse’s (unlimited vs. 100,000 miles).

Fuel Economy and Range

The Voyager Hybrid has a standard locking fuel door with a power remote release convenient to the driver. The fuel filler door is not lockable on the Traverse. A locking fuel door helps prevent fuel theft and vandalism, such as sugar in the tank.

Environmental Friendliness

In its Green Vehicle Guide, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rates the Chrysler Voyager higher (6 out of 10) than the Chevrolet Traverse (5). This means the Voyager produces up to 6.9 pounds less smog-producing pollutants than the Traverse every 15,000 miles.

Transmission

A nine-speed automatic is standard on the Chrysler Voyager, for better acceleration and lower engine speed on the highway. Only an eight-speed automatic is available for the Traverse.

Brakes and Stopping

For better stopping power the Voyager’s brake rotors are larger than those on the Traverse:

Passenger Space

The Voyager has 8.1 cubic feet more passenger volume than the Traverse (165.1 vs. 157).

The Voyager has .3 inches more front hip room, 1.5 inches more front shoulder room, 6.2 inches more rear hip room, .8 inches more rear shoulder room, .4 inches more third row headroom, 4.4 inches more third row legroom, .9 inches more third row hip room and 3.5 inches more third row shoulder room than the Traverse.

Cargo Capacity

The Voyager’s cargo area provides more volume than the Traverse.

A low lift-over cargo hatch design makes loading and unloading the Voyager easier. The Voyager’s cargo hatch lift-over height is 24.3 inches, while the Traverse’s liftover is 30.7 inches.

The Voyager has standard Stow ’n Go second and third row seats, which fold flat into the floor. This completely clears a very large cargo area quickly. The Traverse doesn’t offer seats that fold into the floor.

A standard locking glovebox (which can’t be accessed with the valet key) keeps your small valuables safer in the Voyager. The Traverse doesn’t offer locking storage for small valuables.

Towing

The Voyager’s standard towing capacity is much higher than the Traverse’s (3600 vs. 1500 pounds).

Ergonomics

The Voyager’s front and rear power windows all open or close with one touch of the switches, making it more convenient at drive-up windows and toll booths, or when talking with someone outside of the car. The Traverse’s passenger windows don’t close automatically.

The Voyager’s standard sliding doors can be opened with less than three inches side clearance. The Traverse’s standard rear swing-out doors are bulky and make loading in tight spots difficult.

The Voyager’s power side sliding doors make it much easier to load and unload kids and cargo. One touch opens the door, before you even get to the van. The Traverse doesn’t offer a power rear door.

The Voyager’s rain-sensitive wipers adjust their speed and turn on and off automatically based on the amount of rainfall on the windshield. This allows the driver to concentrate on driving without constantly adjusting the wipers. The Traverse’s standard manually variable intermittent wipers have to be constantly adjusted.

Manual rear side window sunshades are available in the Voyager to help block heat and glare for the rear passengers. The Traverse doesn’t offer rear side window sunshades.

Recommendations

A group of representative automotive journalists from North America selected the Voyager as the 2017 North American Utility Vehicle of the Year. The Traverse has never been chosen.
